What is Latency? How Latency Works

Latency is the time it takes for your computer and other devices to respond to an event like clicking on a link. While this will not affect most people’s Spotify listening or video streaming, it could be a problem for gamers who are using satellite internet. Satellite internet works more accurately than wired connections. This can lead to poor gaming performance due to high packet loss rates from lengthy pings.

Latency refers to the difference between how your input feels (in this instance an anchor) and how quickly it gets delivered to others. So, if you are playing video games or viewing YouTube videos online then Latency can affect your responsiveness too as there is a possibility of things not being 100% exact in terms of timing based on the speed of their fiber optic cables, which brings them into our homes to be able to experience them for ourselves.

What is the cause of the latency?

It is a major issue to gamers and End-users that want to watch their favorite content on the go. The elements that influence your latency include distance between your computer and the server, and everything else that is in between such as internet connection type or Wi-Fi strength (or the lack of it). Also, you can have an impact on the type of router and modem combination you select – there are many options! This doesn’t have the need to be difficult if you find it confusing at first. We’ll walk you through every step of the process here.

Distance

Latency is the time it takes information to travel from one place in space. This is the distance between your computer and the server(s) and how much data you’re seeking from the server. If this distance is not sufficient, there will be an increase in latency.

Propagation Delay

One of the biggest factors in determining how much latency you encounter when you browse on your mobile or computer device is what’s known as “propagation delay.” It’s easy to view it as a singular factor but it is a factor in all other measures of bandwidth and connection speed that we look at including speed of downloads (because those rely on getting data packets back from where they’re delivered) as well as uploads, which depend on having a network interface card the same goes for wireless connectivity too.

Internet Connection Type

There is a significant variation in the latency of different internet connectivity types. Cable and DSL have lower time to download, while fiber has a higher average. Satellites are generally slower due to its architecture which needs more space for transmission. This can lead to delays in waiting times as well as an increase in buffering capacity on websites you need access to, such as audio files or videos.

What’s on a Website?

Have you ever clicked on a link and waited for the site to load and then clicked on it again? It’s because the Angelfire page was too complex. They put The Office memes all over it, and every visit, it takes longer than usual.

Large files such as HD videos and photos require that your web browser download them all. You may experience some latency when the files are located on an external server far from the site you are currently viewing.
